Vitamin deficiencies are very common and often go undetected in many bariatric patients until they have serious complications. When patients don't take their multivitamins regularly or take a non-bariatric vitamin, it can lead to health complications and difficulty with long-term weight management.
Deficiencies develop over time and can be difficult to correct once you experience symptoms. Fatigue, weak bones, depression, frequent illness, and memory loss can be signs of micronutrient deficiencies. Remember, deficiencies can ALSO be the reason that you feel like eating more. When you are sluggish or down, you may crave sugar and avoid exercise, which leads to weight regain.
Bariatric patients need a specially formulated vitamin that is designed to meet their unique health needs after surgery. A smaller stomach and, in some cases, reduced nutrient absorption, makes it impossible to meet nutritional needs through food alone or with a standard multivitamin. Even if you take two doses of a standard multivitamin, you will still be deficient in many nutrients. Some vitamins, like Thiamin and B-12, require 8 to 10 times the normal dose, so 2 children's vitamins, prenatal vitamins or standard multivitamins won't provide the right amount for you.
Vitamin Patches for Bariatric Patients are NOT recommended. Most vitamins and minerals are not well absorbed through the skin.
The best vitamin for bariatric patients is one that is designed for your needs and that you can take consistently. Many bariatric patients don’t take multivitamins after surgery, or they become less consistent over time. That is exactly how vitamin and mineral deficiencies can develop.
The most common reasons that patients don’t maintain a regular bariatric vitamin routine after surgery are forgetfulness, GI side effects, unpleasant taste or smell, and cost.

“I switched to Opurity Vitamins and now my labs are perfect.”
Hair loss after bariatric surgery is common. It can be attributed to the stress of the surgery, hormonal changes, and other stressors related to recovery and management of obesity.
Three things you can do that might help prevent or minimize hair loss after bariatric surgery:
1. Take a bariatric specific vitamin every day. Vitamins such as Opurity® have appropriate levels of zinc, folic acid, iron, and other micronutrients for bariatric surgery patients.
2. Get 90 grams of high-quality protein spread evenly throughout your day. High Quality Protein such as UNJURY® Protein, includes all of the amino acids, or building blocks, needed for cell repair and tissue building.
3. Manage stress levels. You might try guided meditation, journaling, long walks or even working with a counselor to keep your stress levels in check.
